33 BLOOR EAST

The 17-storey office building at 33 Bloor East was restored and revitalized in 2020 after almost three decades since the building’s opening in 1991. The Postmodern office tower features a reimagined ground floor containing new retail spaces, as well as a modernized lobby to serve the 300,000 ft² office tower above. The project involved major exterior changes at the base of the building, with an enclosure and re-cladding throughout the first two floors of the Bloor Street frontage, and similar recladding for a small portion of the Hayden Street frontage surrounding the south entrance. The plan also included a redesign of ground-level and below-grade interior spaces, featuring a white curved architectural ceiling. Along with the new look, renovations will also bring 8,320 ft² of retail space to the site's Bloor Street East frontage, and an additional 6,264 ft² fronting onto Hayden Street to the south.

Along with the main branch undergoing renovations at the street level, the six floors that make up the Head Office above was restored with new stainless steel staircases and railings, complimented by immaculate glass balustrades. Construction and installation had to be phased in order for the BMO branch to remain in operation throughout the process.

WAYNE GRETZKY ESTATES WINERY & DISTILLERY

Completed in 2017, the 23,000 ft² facility includes a winery, distillery, tasting areas, retail and hospitality spaces, fermentation facilities, offices, and barrel storage areas. The modern barn-like structure, designed by architect Gren Weis, features an exaggerated structure with immense glass walls to allow for uninterrupted views between the interior spaces and the landscape beyond. Large views are seen as an important feature for the appreciation and engagement with the vineyards and connection to the winemaking and distillation process. The building’s materials also pay homage to the surrounding agriculture lands using a light metal roof, stained wood siding, and a mixture of concrete/stone interventions. The winery and craft distillery will have two floors with a covered structural steel walkway connecting the two buildings.

BILLY BISHOP TORONTO CITY AIRPORT

The three-year rehabilitation initiative of the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport was necessary to replace existing aging civil and electrical infrastructure and ultimately modernize the airport. This work included replacing the runway lighting to energy-efficient LED lighting, restoration of the runway and reconfiguring taxiways. Special procedures such as the barging of materials and supplies were implemented to ensure minimal impacts on local residents as well as travellers. These initiatives to modernize the airport will ensure it continues to serve as an economic engine for the city, provide much needed aviation service and provide efficient service to the 2.5 million passengers who travel through the airport each year. In 2019, the airport received an Environmental Achievement Award for Best Innovative Project for its implementation of the three-year Airfield Rehabilitation Program.

TORONTO-DOMINION CENTRE PAVILION

The TD Centre Pavilion structural steel retrofit was one of the major phases that made up the $200M renewal initiative of Cadillac Fairview’s TD Centre in 2018. The revitalization of the double-height banking pavilion was meticulously planned to ensure every detail of stays true to the original 1969 design. Retrofitting the heritage building required a collaborative effort of the engineering and project management teams to ensure the building is well-supported for the future. The successful structural revitalization ultimately preserves Mies van der Rohe’s signature International Style architectural design.
